Victorian Single Albert by George Edward Gee
This chain comes from the renowned workshop of George Edward Gee, one of Birmingham’s most respected silversmiths of the Victorian era. Hallmarked 1886 on both the T-bar and clip, it features graduated curb links with lions struck on all the originals. I have added, a sympathetic 8 cm extension was added, antique and unmarked but well chosen to match the style. Gee’s chains are consistently sought after for their quality and weight, and this example remains a strong piece of late Victorian silverwork.
Details
Sterling silver (92.5%)
Era: Victorian (1886)
Maker: George Edward Gee, Birmingham
Technique: Graduated curb link
Hallmarks: T-bar and clip dated 1886, lions across all original links; extension unmarked
Dimensions
Weight: 47.96 g
Length: 40 cm + 8 cm removable extension
Why It Matters
Gee is one of the most collected makers of Victorian Alberts, admired for the consistency and sturdiness of his chains. This example, with its full 1886 marks and strong weight, represents his workshop at its height. The later extension only enhances usability without detracting from the Victorian core.
Condition
Antique chain with light wear consistent with age. Extension is later but sympathetic to the style.
Collector’s Note
George Edward Gee chains remain a cornerstone for serious Albert collectors. This piece offers both the satisfaction of a fully dated Victorian chain and the practicality of extended wear length — making it equally appealing for collection or daily use.
